I AM NICKY BHAGAT and I established the MNDA of India
This is a series of posts by people who are hosting screenings of I AM BREATHING around MND/ALS Global Awareness Day.
I am Nicky Bhagat and I am showing the film in India. I established The MND Association of India 20 years ago after my husband Vimal, an actor-director, was struck down, losing both his body and his voice, an actor’s basic tools, snatched from him by motor neurone disease.
Like Neil Platt, he had used his last months to tell his story, dictating laboriously in a hoarse whisper to a loving and patient old friend. He had to race against time as his voice was fading fast. Like Neil, Vimal would have been gung-ho to play his last role as himself – had he but time…
I am much honored to be participating in this inspirational Global Screening of I AM BREATHING.
I hope that soon we may find, if not a cure, at least a way of slowing down MND’s cruel, relentless slide. I am convinced that this could be speeded up by inviting patients and carers more deeply in the search, especially those who may be research-oriented scientists or spiritualists. In fact, the answer to most neurological puzzles may well lie in such multilayered holistic studies involving those closest to the condition.
I will be screening the film on 29 June 2013 in Dehradun (details and RSVP here) and later at the Indian Medical Research Institute as well as hosting it at my own residence.

I AM DARYA BASSEL and we are showing the film in Ukraine
This is a series of posts by people who are going to host screenings of I AM BREATHING on MND/ALS Global Awareness Day.
I am Darya Bassel, and with the team of International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival Docudays UA (Kyiv, Ukraine) we are organizing the screening of I AM BREATHING in Kyiv because this is the film everyone should see.
We saw I AM BREATHING for the first time in Amsterdam at the International Documentary Film Festival in 2012. We were impressed by Neil’s story and by his courage. The film left us with the feeling that everyone who is in hardship now or thinks that he/she is should see this film, and that we want to bring it to the Ukrainian audience so much.
We’d like to thank the organizers of the Global Screening Day. We truly hope this campaign will help them reach their goals and we are absolutely sure that the Global Screening Day will change a lot of lives.
We are going to show I AM BREATHING on 21 June, the Global Screening Day. Details and RSVP here.

I AM TREVOR CRANNEY and I AM SIOBHAN ROCK
This is a series of posts by people who are going to host screenings of I AM BREATHING on MND/ALS Global Awareness Day.
I AM TREVOR CRANNEY and I was diagnosed with ALS
I am a 40-year-old father of three amazing children, a hockey coach and a loving husband. On December 14th, 2012, I have been handed a death sentence. My wife Lynn and I have been together since high school and have overcome challenge after challenge. This one will be our biggest yet, but that doesn’t mean we won’t accept it. We continue to make the best out of every moment we have together. It has become my mission to be a voice and to help raise awareness.
I AM SIOBHAN ROCK and I was diagnosed with ALS
The summer 2011 was a busy one. I gave birth to a baby boy, celebrated my daughter’s 2nd birthday, my eldest son’s 20th birthday, my wedding anniversary and I was diagnosed. I was 39 years old. Although my journey is filled with uncertainty, I build courage and strength from the support of my husband, family and friends. Since my diagnosis, I continue to live life to the fullest and strive to raise awareness about ALS and help others.
Together we are showing the movie in Ottawa. Details and tickets here.
This campaign is an wonderful opportunity for us to participate in raising global awareness. Neil's story has touched our heart in a very special way. It is with honour that we will be hosting the movie screening I AM BREATHING with family, friends and members of the community. We are thankful that Neil has shared his personal journey so openly. It has inspired us. May it continue to inspire others around the globe. It is our hope, that our story, along with Neil’s and others living with this horrible disease, generates the required awareness leading to the appropriate funding, support and eventually a cure.

I AM 杨婧 and I am translating the film into Chinese
This is a series of posts by people who are going to host screenings of I AM BREATHING on MND/ALS Global Awareness Day.
I am Jing and I am translating I AM BREATHING into Chinese for the Beijing screening on Global Screening Day, hosted by Electric Shadows.
The first event in which I worked as a translator and interpreter for Electric Shadows is the European Union Film Festival Shorts Programme in Beijing, I was deeply impressed by the excellent short films. Several months after the EUFF, I cooperated with Electric Shadows and JUE for the Asian Cinema Week. I had lived in Beijing for six years but it was my first time to watch films about some Asian countries that we are less familiar with, such as Mongolia. I was deeply impressed by how Electric Shadows brings people together through art works and provides a stage for people from different cultural backgrounds to share and communicate together. Therefore, when Vicky Mohieddeen asked me whether I could translate the subtitles of I AM BREATHING as a volunteer, I said yes. It is a pleasure to work with Electric Shadows, especially for a charity aim.
Electric Shadows is a non-profit organisation helping to shape the evolution of public cinema in China by programming beautiful film events and expanding the cinema into galleries, rooftops, deserts and discos. Founded in January 2009 it has since grown to become one of Beijing’s most prominent independent film organisations working with the most exciting local cultural spaces and festivals, helping to bring cinematic gems to every corner of the ever-shifting physical and cultural landscape of Beijing. Electric Shadows was founded by Vicky Mohieddeen, alumna of the Edinburgh College of Art and the Scottish Documentary Institute.
Electric Shadows will show I AM BREATHING on 21 June in the Zajia Lab at the Hong En Daoist Temple in Bejing. Details and RSVP here.

I AM RACHAEL CARTER and I was Neil's friend
This is a series of posts by people who are going to host screenings of I AM BREATHING on MND/ALS Global Awareness Day.
I am Rachael Carter, and together with Siobhan Morton, I am organising a screening in London.
I met Neil whilst working at the same architectural firm in London Bridge, he very quickly became a good friend, mainly because he was such fun to be around. Neil was warm, extremely funny, and charismatic, and my memories of the time we spent together are just filled with so much laughter.
Neil still provides so much inspiration for me and all the people that knew and loved him – he was one in a million.
Losing Neil four years ago hit me hard, I vowed from that day on that I would do all I could to raise awareness about MND and as Neil wanted, to spread the word.
For the Global Screening Day of I AM BREATHING myself and other friends of Neil’s will be hosting a screening at the Cinema Museum. Details and tickets here.
The Cinema Museum has kindly offered to host this event for free – all proceeds will be going to the MND Association.

I AM EROLL BILIBANI and we are showing the film in Kosovo
This is a series of posts by people who are going to host screenings of I AM BREATHING on MND/ALS Global Awareness Day.
I am Eroll, and along with Veton, Nita, Aliriza, Samir and others from DokuFest, we are showing the film in Kosovo. We run the International Documentary and Short Film Festival DokuFest, held annually in the city of Prizren.
We are showing the film on Global Screening Day in one of the unique venues, an old open air cinema, to raise awareness among the Kosovar society and young people in particular about motor neurone disease (MND), this fatal disease that is unknown to most of the people here.
It is of utmost importance for all of us globally to increase awareness of this disease. We hope that through this screening, more people find out about MND, and this heartbreaking story reaches out to all decision-makers and potential donors that could contribute to further research. We are glad that DokuFest can contribute by showing this excellent film.
We are going to screen the film on 21 June at SHKA in Prizren. Details and RSVP here.

I AM PARAMITA DAS and I am showing the film in Kolkata
This is a series of posts by people who are going to host screenings of I AM BREATHING on MND/ALS Global Awareness Day.
I am Paramita and I'm showing I AM BREATHING in India, as this film is about an intense dialogue between life and death, an intimate way of knowing what makes us human, and a strong portrayal of determination of human mind and adaptability.
This film tells us about the humour and honesty of a human mind facing a terminal illness like motor neurone disease. I AM BREATHING is 'meaning of life'. This film needs to be seen not only for generating awareness of MND in India but also for its philosophy of sublime even when life is being nibbled to death. It is a breathing space for people across the globe to feel the grace of life.
I am breathing as you are breathing. I am breathing as we are breathing.
The Film and Television Institute of India screened I AM BREATHING earlier this month in Pune, and the Department of Film Studies at Jadavpur University will show the film on Global Screening Day in Kolkata.

I AM JUDY KIBINGE and I am showing the film in Nairobi
This is a series of posts by people who are going to host screenings of I AM BREATHING on MND/ALS Global Awareness Day.
I am Judy Kibinge and I am a Kenyan filmmaker and the founder of DOCUBOX, a newly established documentary film fund for East Africa. I believe that few things can illumintate what it is to be human as well as a good observational documentary.
I recall a few decades back attending my older brothers graduation at Dartmouth and being haunted for years by something one of the speakers said. He asked what a tiny speck of dust might say as it floats towards a surface, one of billions of specks of identical flecks of dust:
“Remember me,” says the dust. “Remember me.”
I AM ANN STOKES and I was Neil's teacher
This is a series of posts by people who are going to host screenings of I AM BREATHING on MND/ALS Global Awareness Day.
I am Ann from Flockton near Huddersfield in England. I am hosting a screening of I AM BREATHING as a tribute to Neil Platt.
I had the privilege of teaching Neil at High School. He worked on the stage crew of the school productions and I got to know Neil and his family well through this. We became family friends and we were all delighted to attend his wedding to Louise.
I promised myself that I would do what I could to continue his campaign to raise awareness of MND.
For the Global Screening Day of I AM BREATHING, I am hosting a screening in Huddersfield Town Hall on 21 June, organised through my WI group, Tea and Tarts. We are going to fund-raise for MND on the evening by having a Platt’s Bar and some music after the film to raise a glass to Neil! Details and RSVP here.
